Race the Ripton Ridge Run this Sunday, Oct. 8

RIPTON — The Ripton Ridge Run is expecting a boost in participants from throughout the region as the popular 5K/10K run and 5K fun walk celebrates its 30th birthday on Oct. 8.
Always the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend, this year’s event starts at 12:30 at the Ripton Elementary School. The courses take runners and walkers on paved and dirt roads showcasing some of Ripton’s natural beauty. The 10.4K run is a challenging loop. The 5K run is out and back and also includes some of Ripton’s hilly terrain. For people not up for a run, there’s a 5K fun walk on the same scenic course. All end back at the school for the 30th annual event’s lunch, awards, raffle, and festivities.
Race day registration is from 11 a.m. to noon. The registration fee includes race, full lunch, raffle, long-sleeved t-shirt and a special commemorative glass. There are prizes for top runners and glass medallions to top runners in every age group. Race day fees are $25 for ages 15 and under, $30 for seniors of 65 plus and $40 for ages 16-64. The Ripton Elementary School is on the Ripton-Lincoln Rd., less than a mile from the Ripton Country Store.
The Ridge Run depends on the generosity of many, many local businesses — some having contributed from the beginning. Funds raised benefit the Ripton Elementary School though the Friends of the Ripton School.
“There are many opportunities that would be out of reach for our students if it weren’t for FORS and the Ridge Run,” said Principal Tracey Harrington.  “Our students’ experiences are greatly enriched, thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and our local business sponsors.” Barry King, a member of the Ridge Run Steering Committee adds, “Ripton’s citizens turn out in force to make the day successful and fun. We’ve got a strong sense of community and that’s really evident at the Ridge Run.
