VUHS wins, MUHS ties on road in boys’ soccer play

ADDISON COUNTY — Vergennes won and Middlebury picked up a road tie as the high school boys’ soccer season opened late last week.
Otter Valley’s Tuesday home game vs. Twin Valley was postponed; no make-up date was immediately announced.
Mount Abraham was set to open at Green Mountain Valley on Wednesday afternoon, after the deadline for this edition of the Independent. MUHS and VUHS were also scheduled to play on Wednesday.
VUHS RALLIES
The Commodores scored twice in the second half to knock off host GMVS on Sept. 1, 2-1. Josias Salomao tallied the game-winner, with an assist from Avery Husk, and earlier in the half Husk knotted the score at 1-1, with an assist from Salomao. Jeffrey Stearns debuted in the VUHS goal with six saves, allowing only Max Martin’s early-game penalty kick. Trevor McGlaflin made five saves for the Gumbies.
TIGERS TIE COUGARS
Also on this past Friday, MUHS battled host Mount Mansfield to a 1-1 draw in what MUHS Coach Reeves Livesay called an evenly played game. MUHS had nine shots, the Cougars, 10; the corners were even at six each; and Tiger goalie Santiago Fernandez made three saves, a total matched by two MMU goalies. Tiger striker Camden Simpson hit a post in the late going, when Livesay said the Tigers became “increasingly dangerous.” “It was a solid first game for us,” he said.
