East Middlebury honors librarian at town picnic

EAST MIDDLEBURY — On Sunday, June 4, 84 East Middlebury residents and friends gathered for the town’s annual picnic. This year Mona Rogers, librarian, was honored for her contributions to the community.
Mona began her service when the Sarah Partridge Community House library became a branch of Ilsley Library in 2003. During her tenure she has developed a Tuesday morning storytime for preschoolers, craft programs for school age children, and a book discussion group for adults. Mona incorporates her long-time interests of music and gardening into her activities. The library serves as a meeting place for new residents and Mona makes everyone feel welcome.
This picnic is a community endeavor. Eight residents had the tent, tables and chairs set up in 45 minutes on Saturday. Sunday morning setup was accomplished in half an hour. During that time other residents did various tasks. At the conclusion, all was picked up and put away in half an hour. Many hands make light work.
East Middlebury has entered a new phase. This one features children, who were scarce for a long time. Young families are moving into town and children are now a part of our life again. The playground behind the picnic space was full of activity during the picnic.
In the past East Middlebury was considered to be the area within the Fire District boundaries. Last year a resident of Forest Ridge questioned this assumption. Many people who live on the east side of the Town of Middlebury consider themselves to be part of East Middlebury. To these residents, we welcome you and encourage you to join us at next year’s picnic.
