High school softball teams look to playoffs

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school softball this past Wednesday and Thursday, both Mount Abraham and Vergennes lost road games, while Otter Valley had a game postponed.
Games held on Friday and Saturday were played after the early holiday deadline for this edition of the Independent.
The Vermont Principals’ Association will release playoff pairings on Monday morning, and first-round games will begin on Tuesday and Wednesday.
EAGLES
The Eagles were upset on Thursday by Spaulding, 9-7. The 4-12 Tide scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 7-7 tie and held on for the win.
Rachael McCormick doubled and singled twice for the Eagles, and Katelynn Ouellette doubled and singled and scored twice.
The Eagles dropped to 10-5, but retained first place in Division II despite their fifth loss in eight games. Unofficially, they were in position to nail down the top seed with a win at OV on Saturday afternoon.
OTTERS
The Otters were scheduled to visit Fair Haven on Thursday, but rain moved that game to Friday. The Otters were also set to host a split doubleheader on Saturday. Hartford was scheduled to visit at 11 a.m., and then OV was ready to host the Eagles at 4:30 p.m. in a game postponed from Monday. The Otters carried a 7-6 record into those games and could earn a seed as high as No. 6 or as low as No. 10 in D-II depending on their results.
COMMODORES
On Thursday, D-I North Country pounded out a 21-6 victory over the Commodores. Details of that game were not available before deadline. VUHS dropped to 3-12. The Commodores were hoping to reschedule a game vs. Rice postponed from Monday, but were unable to and will enter the postseason with that record and a No. 12 or 13 seed in D-II.
