City farmers market starting season at new home

VERGENNES — This summer the Vergennes Farmer’s Market will move to a new site with new hours. Chris and Sandy Reck, the new managers of the market, have set the start of the 2017 summer market on June 1 at its new home at Kennedy Brothers on Main St.
Last summer, Chris, and Sandy started Route 7 Pie Co. as a means to get to know more Vergennes residents. Sales were good and they enjoyed the experience. In part because of their success, Chris and Sandy were approached to start an indoor winter farmer’s market at Kennedy Brothers.
The winter market proved successful — it supported up to 12 vendors and 100 customers on Saturday mornings. At that time, the existing Vergennes Farmer’s Market management approached Chris and Sandy to take over the summer market.
Interviews with vendors and customers told the Recks that while successful, the market could be improved. Lack of parking, bathrooms, visibility and a rainy day location all were cited as issues. By moving the market to Kennedy Brothers, these issues were all solved. The Recks have rebranded the market and initiated professional-quality promotion in order to draw in more customers. Their aim is to eventually include approximately 20 vendors, with farmers and food providers comprising about 50 percent of the spaces. Live music will also be a staple.
“Our philosophy is to create a ‘farmers market plus’.” Chris Reck commented. “We want to add to the ‘Vergennes vibe’ of being a foodie destination. By providing a place to be, rather than just a place to buy, we can do that.”
The Vergennes Farmer’s Market will run on Thursdays from June 1 through Oct. 5 from 4-7:30 p.m.  Rain location will be inside the Kennedy Brothers building.
