Tiger boys fall in D-I hockey quarterfinal
SOUTH BURLINGTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team won a first-round Division I playoff game last week before losing a road quarterfinal. The Tigers finished at 12-8-2 and fared better than the other three D-II teams who were bumped up to D-I this winter.
On Wednesday, the Tigers bolted to a 5-0 lead over No. 11 Woodstock before surrendering two third-period goals in a 5-2 win. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the game’s first two minutes on goals from Andrew Gleason, assisted by Brett Viens, and Tyler Giorgio, set up by Devon Kearns and Kolby Farnsworth.
MUHS then put the game out of reach with second-period strikes from Farnsworth, Henry Hodde and Kam Bartlett. Giorgio assisted Farnsworth and Bartlett, and Jake Peluso assisted Hodde’s goal.
Cullen McCarthy netted both Wasp goals, one with three second left.
Tiger goalie Doug DeLorenzo posted 16 saves, and goalies Jason Drebber and Henry Greene made 15 saves apiece for the 4-16-1 Wasps.
On Saturday, No. 3 Champlain Valley (12-6-3) edged the Tigers, 1-0, at Cairns Arena in South Burlington. Redhawk Joe Parento notched the game-winner in the second period, and CVU goalie Ty Parker worked a 14-save shutout. DeLorenzo made 33 saves in the Tiger net.
