MUHS gymnastics team vies at state meet

ESSEX — The Middlebury Union High School gymnastics team concluded its season by finishing sixth among 10 teams at this past Saturday’s state championship meet at Essex High School.
Host Essex won the title for the 12th straight season, scoring 144.25 points to defeat second-place Champlain Valley (139.775), with South Burlington (131.90) in third. Division I St. Johnsbury took fourth (121.20).
The other six teams often compete in lower divisions and do not have year-round access to club gymnastics. Among those teams, the Tigers, with 113.025 points, trailed only fifth-place Harwood, which edged them with 114.05 points. Milton, Montpelier, Randolph and U-32 trailed the field.
In individual events, none of the Tigers finished in the top eight. Scoring for MUHS were:
•  Vault: Lian McGarry, 7.95; Chloe Kane, 7.85; Carly Burger, 7.55; Anna Buteau, 6.8; and Olivia Beauchamp and Lucy Orsitti, 6.6 each.
•  Bars: McGarry, 6.9; Aly Chione, 6.55; Laura Whitley, 6.225; Kane, 5.80; Arianna Slavin, 5.75; and Beauchamp, 5.4.
•  Beam: Beauchamp, 8.175; Whitley, 8.15; McGarry, 7.65; Buteau, 7.5; Burger, 6.6; Lydia Alberts, 6.25.
•  Floor: Slavin, 6.95; Burger, 6.375; Kane, 6.35; Christina Wiles and Buteau, 6.25; and Ursitti, 6.025.
