MUHS boys’ hockey splits games

MIDDLEBURY — Lake Placid edged the Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team, 3-2, on Thursday in the final game of the Fletcher “Buster” Brush Holiday Classic to win the tournament title.
The Bombers, who defeated Milton, 5-4 in overtime, on Wednesday were the only team to win both of its games in the event. The Tigers defeated Stowe on Wednesday, and Stowe thumped Milton on Thursday, 6-0.
The Tigers edged Stowe, 2-1, on second-period goals from Kolby Farnsworth and Kam Bartlett. Goalie Doug DeLorenzo backstopped the win with 21 saves, while Raider netminder Kristian Viljanen stopped 22 shots.
On Thursday, the Bombers scored twice in the third period to erase a 2-1 Tiger lead and avenge a 2-1 home loss to MUHS the week before. Lake Placid’s Sean Moore gave his team the lead in the first period, but the Tigers struck back on second period goals by Brett Viens, unassisted, and Bartlett, set up by Viens and Tyler Giorgio.
The Bombers earned the win with two goals in the final 5:20, from Kevin Geesler and Moore. Delorenzo made 25 saves for the Tigers, and Kamm Cassidy stopped 21 shots for Lake Placid.
The Tigers (2-3) return to Division I league play this week by hosting Woodstock at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and visiting Rice on Saturday.
