Police haven’t identified human remains found by hiker in Middlebury on Friday
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials are looking to identify human remains found in Middlebury Friday morning.
At 11:43 a.m. on Oct. 21, the Middlebury Police Department received a call from a hiker who reported finding a body in the woods between Court Street Extension (Route 7) and Seminary Street Extension.
The police responded to the area and located human remains. On scene Friday afternoon were the Police Department Crime Scene Unit, an assistant state’s attorney and the assistant medical examiner.
The remains were removed and sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner; a post-mortem examination was expected to be conducted Saturday.
The Vermont State Police Crime Scene Team is working with the Middlebury Police Crime Scene Unit in processing the scene and conducting a search for evidence in the death. Deputies from the Addison County Sheriff’s Department are also providing assistance.
Police were on scene continuously from shortly before noon on Friday through at least mid-afternoon on Saturday, when Chief Tom Hanley made his last public statement.
Identification of the remains, age, gender, cause and manner of death are as yet undetermined and the investigation continues.
