Area swimmers earn gold at state championship

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — After a long summer of training, the Vergennes Champs and the Middlebury Marlins competed for the last time this season at the Vermont State Championship swim meet this past weekend.
Twenty teams and 774 swimmers competed over the course of Saturday and Sunday at the Upper Valley Aquatic Club in White River Junction.
The Champs finished second in Division II and fifth overall with a score of 1,207.5. The Brattleboro Swim Team won D-II with a score of 1,262.5.
The Marlins emerged third in Division III with a score of 826. They were beat out by the Rockingham Area Swim Team (891) and the Burlington Country Club (913.5). Overall, the Marlins finished 10th out of 20 teams in the meet.
The top three teams at the meet were EDGE Swim Club (4,202), the Town of Essex Swim Team (2,817), and the Burlington Tennis Club (1,642.5).
Vergennes swimmers claimed a number of first- and second-place finishes, their spirits high after a successful league championship the previous weekend.
Ellie Brooks, 6, swam to two first-place victories in the 6 and under 25-yard backstroke with a time of 23.27 and the U-6 25-yard freestyle with a time of 20.20.
Hadley Harris, 10, also captured a first-place finish in the 9-10 25-yard backstroke (18.19) and the 9-10 25-yard breaststroke (18.72). Acadia Clark, 10, came in a close second to Harris in the breaststroke with a time of 18.95.
Will Clark, 7, who won three titles at the league championships, finished first in the U-8 25-yard breaststroke with a time of 22.30, second in the 7-8 25-yard freestyle (16.01) and second in the U-8 50-yard freestyle (35.61).
Other second-place finishes for the Champs included Noah Engvall, 12, in the 11-12 50-yard breaststroke (38.64); Nathan Viera, 14, in the 13-14 50-yard breaststroke (30.97); Jake Viera, 16, in the 15-16 50-yard freestyle (23.25) and two relays.
Harris, Clark, Madelyn Giroux, 10, and Aislynne McGill, 9, grabbed second in the U-10 100-yard medley relay with a time of 1:12.59. Clark, Harris and Giroux were later joined by Ava Holmes, 10, for a second-place finish in the U-10 100-yard freestyle relay and a time of 1:02.85.
Of note was Olivia Hawkins, 16, who achieved personal bests in all of her individual events and helped lead the team to success.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our team,” said Champs head coach Jen Bechtold. “We had a fantastic season with a lot of new and returning swimmers who swam many personal bests throughout the summer.”
The Middlebury Marlins also made waves at the meet thanks to a second-place finish by Archie Milligan, 16, in the open 500-yard freestyle (5:24.25) and by his big sister, Harriet Milligan, 18, in the 17-18 50-yard freestyle (35.95). Additionally, the Marlins boasted two second-place relays.
The Middlebury relay team of Will Carpenter, Devon Kearns, Oliver Poduschnick, and Fraser Milligan claimed second in the U-14 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:06.65. Poduschnick; Spencer Doran, 14; Nathan Stone, 13; and Kearns grabbed second in the U-14 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:48.91.
As the meet began to wind down, the Addison County teams came together for a final event. Marlins swimmers Milligan and Jacob Brookman, 16, joined Vergennes Champs Jarret Muzzy, 13, and Max Ratti-Bicknell, 17, for the U-18 200-yard freestyle relay.
The group finished with a time of 1:47.58 and although their points couldn’t be counted, their Addison County spirit was high.
