Opinion: Drawbridges an excellent idea

What happened to the suggestion in a recent letter to the Independent for drawbridges?
An excellent idea. The sides of the trench might need work but the tracks would not need lowering. The bridges need replacing anyway, so why not with drawbridges?
Drawbridges with the same height might not need to be raised for several years, as the railroads say they won’t send double-decker trains for years. By then the bridges might rust shut for lack of use, but that would be easier to fix than building higher bridges when needed.
So, lets talk up drawbridges as a fine solution for downtown Middlebury. Maybe with big overhead beams like a Van Gogh painting. Imagine the tourists that would bring.
