Candidates sought for unified school board in ANwSU

VERGENNES — Residents of the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns who are interested in serving on the proposed 12-member board to govern all four ANwSU schools if district unification passes on March 1 must act quickly to get their names on their Town Meeting Day ballots.
Candidates for the position of “Union School Director” for what would become the “Addison Northwest School District” must hand in petitions, signed by 1 percent of their communities’ residents, to their town clerks on or before Monday, Jan. 25.
Voting on unification and Addison Northwest School District board members is contingent on State Board of Education approval of the ANwSU unification plan, but that approval is all but certain at the state board’s Jan. 19 meeting.
The ANwSU plan calls for four unified district board members each from Ferrisburgh and Vergennes, two from Addison, and one each from Panton and Waltham. Those proportions are along the lines of the towns’ current representation on the Vergennes Union High School board.
The anwsu.org website offers information on unification; on Act 46, which offers tax breaks and other incentives to districts that unify; and on the ANwSU unification proposal.
