VUHS tops Eagles in boys’ basketball
ADDISON COUNTY — Vergennes defeated rival Mount Abraham to highlight local high school boys’ basketball action in the latter half of last week. In other games, VUHS, Otter Valley and Middlebury all came up short.
VUHS VS. MT. ABE
On Wednesday, the Commodores outlasted the host Eagles, 62-46. Mount Abe hung with the Commodores through three quarters, trailing by only three points, but VUHS outscored Mount Abe by 26-13 in the final eight minutes and pulled away.
Josh Dam sparked the VUHS with 20 points, and Hunter O’Connor added 10. Jackson Counter’s 12 points led the 0-10 Eagles, and Jack Willis contributed 11.
On Saturday, the Commodores led visiting Montpelier throughout by slim margins, including by 26-21 at the half and 38-34 entering the fourth. But the 7-3 Solons, who received 23 points and 18 rebounds from Alvaro de Cordoba, rallied past VUHS in the final three minutes, 54-51.
The Commodores had the ball down by a point with less than a minute to go, but turned the ball over, leading to two Solon free throws, and then could not sink a pair of potential game-tying threes in the final seconds. Josh Benning led the 4-7 Commodores with 11 points.
OTTERS
On Friday, visiting Windsor improved to 9-1 with a 61-51 victory over the Otters. OV trailed by just two after three periods, but the Jacks pulled away in the fourth quarter. Derek Aines scored 13 points to lead OV, and Josh Letourneau (10), Kai Norwood (nine), and Dylan Mackie (eight) also contributed in a balanced scoring effort. The Otters dropped to 3-9.
TIGERS
On Thursday, visiting Division I title contender Rutland (7-2) coasted past the Tigers 64-21. Raider Nathaniel Kingsley scored a game-high 19 points, while Ryan Miller led the Tigers with six points.
On Saturday, visiting Colchester (5-6) defeated the Tigers, 57-38, dropping the Tigers to 1-8. Details of that game were not reported.
