Tiger girls move on in D-I soccer

MIDDLEBURY — The No. 7 Middlebury Union High School girls’ soccer team won its first-round Division I playoff game on Tuesday, 2-0, over visiting No. 10 Rice.
The victory improved the Tigers’ season record to 9-5-1 after a disappointing 1-3-1 start. Since then the Tigers are 8-2.
But they face a challenge next, a 3 p.m. Friday quarterfinal date at No. 2 Colchester (15-0). The two teams did not meet this fall.
Tuesday’s game was scoreless at the half, with Rice holding a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Tigers turned it around after the break to earn a 7-1 second-half advantage in shots on goal, two of which found the net.
Kess Moulton broke the ice for MUHS by scoring off a corner kick at 27:29. At 10:47, Kelsey Smith iced the win by one-timing home an Isabel Rosenberg cross to make it 2-0.
Tiger goalie Molly Campbell worked a five-save shutout, while Hannah Miller stopped eight shots for Rice.
