Middlebury men split two soccer contests
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team split a pair of one-goal NESCAC road games this past weekend. The Panthers emerged with a 7-2-1 record, 4-2-1 in league play. The Panthers will next host NESCAC foe Trinity on Saturday at 2 p.m.
On Sunday, the Panthers rallied with two goals in the final 22 minutes to edge host Wesleyan, 2-1. The loss snapped Wesleyan’s six-game unbeaten streak; the Cardinals are now 7-3-1 and 3-2-1 in NESCAC play.
Greg Conrad scored the winning goal by heading home a Philip Skayne cross at 79:50.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, with Wesleyan outshooting the Panthers 7-5.
In the second half, the Cardinals put five shots on goal in the first 10 minutes, and one of those, a header by Adam Cowie-Haskell, found the net 7:50 into the half.
The Panthers tied the match at 68:49, when Daniel O’Grady fired a shot home from 18 yards out.
Panther goalie Greg Sydor made a career-high 12 saves, while Jack Katkavich made five saves for the Cardinals.
On Saturday, host Tufts topped the Panthers, 1-0. The Jumbos improved to 6-3-1, 4-2-1 in league play.
Nathan Majumder tallied the game-winner, his team-high sixth goal of the season, in the 53rd minute on a feed from Jason Kayne. Kayne drove the ball upfield to Majumder, who played the ball into the left side of the box and knocked it past Sydor.
Middlebury’s best chance to tie the game came in the 78th minute when Tyler Bonini controlled the ball into the box one-on-one with Jumbos goalkeeper Scott Greenwood, who dove to save Bonini’s 10-yard bid for his only save of the match. Sydor made three saves for the Panthers.
