MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team scored 92 seconds into play Saturday on the way to a 3-0 NESCAC victory over visiting Colby. Middlebury improved to 6-1-1, 3-1-1 in league play and will return to action on Saturday at Tufts.
In the second minute, Adam Glaser collected a loose ball near midfield and drove down the left side. He sent a bending ball into the wind. And Daniel O’Grady headed it in from six yards out.
Colby’s best scoring chance of the half came in the ninth minute, but Panther defender Deklan Robinson blocked Kyle Douglas’s shot from in front of the goal 12 yards away. The 1-0 lead held at the half.
In the 50th minute, Panther goalie Greg Sydor lunged to his right to deny Lucas Pereira after he worked his way behind the Panther defense.
The Panthers made it 2-0 at 62:09, when Glaser one-touched home Robinson’s wind-aided 75-yard free kick that dropped behind the Mule defense.
Middlebury took a 3-0 lead on a Kirk Horton goal about 12 minutes later. Horton finished from seven yards out on a corner kick after Robinson headed the ball to him; Tom Dils had headed to ball to Robinson.
Middlebury held advantages in both shots (23-5) and corner kicks (9-3). Sydor made two saves for his fourth shutout of the season and 12th of his career. Two Colby goalies combined for 11 saves.
