Tiger and Otter field hockey teams, plus Eagle boys’ soccer win games

ADDISON COUNTY — In high school sports action in the middle of last week, Middlebury and Otter Valley field hockey and Mount Abraham boys’ soccer earned wins, while the Eagle and Tiger girls’ soccer squads and the OV boys’ and girls’ soccer teams came up short.
News on games played on Friday and Saturday, including by the Vergennes soccer teams and all three local football squads, could not be included in this edition of the Independent due to an early holiday deadline. Information on those games will be included in our Thursday edition.
The MUHS field hockey team rallied past host Mount Mansfield on Wednesday to win its opener, 2-1. The Cougars took a 1-0 halftime lead, but second-half goals by Lily Smith and Mikayla Humiston helped the Tigers claim the victory, as did a combined 10 saves from goalies Sophia Chicoine andKatie Billings. Margaret Thompson scored for Mount Mansfield (0-1), while two Cougar goalies combined for four saves.
The Tigers were set for another road game on Friday, at Hartford.
The OV field hockey team edged host Fair Haven, 1-0, on Thursday to improve to 2-0. Allison Lowell scored for OV with four minutes to go in the first half, rapping home a rebound of a Maia Edmunds shot.
Fair Haven goalie Keilanni Pellerin stopped 10 shots, while the Otter defense allowed just one shot on OV goalie Myliah McDonough as she worked the shutout. The Otters will face Fair Haven a second time on Sept. 9 at OV.
On Thursday, five Eagles scored as the Mount Abe boys’ soccer team shut out visiting Mill River, 5-0. Finding the net were Jack Willis,Caleb Bonvouloir,Nick Catlin,Charlie Meyer andOwein LaBarr.
In goal Nick Szczecinski and Bonvouloir combined for four saves as the Eagles improved to 2-0. Austin MacMurray stopped five shots for the 0-2 Minutemen. The Eagles will visit BFA-Fairfax on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, host Rutland improved to 2-0 by edging the MUHS girls’ soccer team, 1-0, in the Tigers’ opener. Jordan DelBianco’s first-half goal stood up as the game-winner. Raider goalie Loren Henderson denied a second-half breakaway bid by Tiger Payton Buxton to preserve the lead. The Tigers were set to host Fair Haven on Saturday.
On Thursday, visiting Twin Valley boys’ soccer blanked OV, 5-0, as TV’s Justin Hicks found the net three times, twice in the first eight minutes. The Otters dropped to 0-2 despite goalie Colin Nicklaw’s 26 saves; they put three shots on the Twin Valley goal.
The Otters were looking to break through when they hosted Fair Haven on Saturday at Proctor High School. They next will visit VUHS on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, visiting Arlington edged the OV girls’ soccer team, 3-2, as 8th-grader Tess Belnap scored twice. For the Otters, Lexi Hedding scored, assisted by Jillian Flanders, and Abbie Pinkowski tallied with a setup from Olivia Drew.
The Otters were slated to host Bellows Falls on Friday afternoon.
On Wednesday, visiting Champlain Valley, the defending Division I champion, edged the defending D-II champion Eagle girls’ soccer team, 1-0, in the opener for both teams. Ali Bisaccia’s first-half goal stood up as the game-winner. Mount Abe goalie Zoe Cassels-Brown stopped 13 shots, while Redhawk keeper Michaela Flore made two saves.
The Eagles were scheduled to host U-32 on Saturday morning.
