Playoff determines winner of PGA junior golf tourney in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Tyler Smith, a member of the Newport Country Club, outshot Logan Boyles of the Green Mountain National Golf Course in a playoff to capture the title in the Boys’ 16- and 17-year-old Division at the Vermont PGA Junior Championship at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course in Middlebury this past Friday. Both golfers shot 74 strokes (three over par) in the regular 18 holes of the match before the playoff.
The field was close behind with Sam Myers of the Links at Lang Farm carding a 75 for third place, Carsen Sanchez — a Ralph Myhre club member — garnering fourth with a 76, Irwin Stuart of Links at Lang Farm in fifth at 79, and Chase Robert Sharpe of Vermont National at sixth at 80.
Hogan Beazley of the Ralph Myhre Club earned 15th place with a 90.
Five 16- and 17-year-olds were chosen to represent Vermont at the New England Junior Championship, Aug. 16-18, at Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The members of the Vermont team are Smith, Boyles, Myers, Sanchez, Alex Giroux, Jared Nelson and Bryson Richards.
In the Boys’ 13-14-year-old Division, Andrew Dieringer of Champlain Country Club won with an 82. Nate Honeywell and Brody Yates tied for second, both shot 84. Fourth was Jacob Bouffard with an 85.
Austin Giroux shot 78 to win the Boys’ 1-12-year-old Division. Jon Honeywell was second with an 82.
ADULT GOLFING
In the Friday Evening Mixed Scramble on the seventh, the quartet of Bernie Andrews, Joan Guertin, Nancy Reynolds and Andy Bourdon won first place over the trio of Wes Smith, Jim Craig and Priscilla Leng. Jim Reynolds won Closest to the Pin on No. 4.
This Saturday, Aug. 15, Ralph Myhre will host a “Club Challenge” vs. Brandon’s Neshobe Golf Club. The contest gets under way at 8:30 a.m. with a back nine shotgun start.
Next Wednesday, Aug. 19, will see the Middlebury College Annual Employee Golf Tournament, which is open to all employees and retirees of Middlebury College.
