VERGENNES — A 24-year-old Vergennes man, who Vermont State Police last year implicated in a series of home burglaries across three counties, was sentenced last week to 38 months in prison for being a felon in possession of firearms. Kyle Tetreault was also sentenced to three years of supervised release following his release from prison.
According to press releases issued by the office of Acting U.S. Attorney Eugenia A.P. Cowles, Tetreault and 21-year-old Scott Taylor of Milton committed a number of residential burglaries in Vermont during which he stole firearms and other items. Subsequently, the two men traded some of the stolen firearms to an out-of-state drug dealer in exchange for heroin.
Tetreault had previously been convicted in Vermont state court of a felony offense punishable by more than one year in prison. Thus, he was prohibited from possessing firearms at the time of the conduct at issue in the case.
In late January 2014 state police issued a statement saying their investigation showed that Tetreault (who at the time was identified as a Ferrisburgh resident) and 20-year-old Scott Taylor of Milton were responsible for a two-month-long burglary spree.
In December 2013 and January 2014, state police received multiple reports of burglaries in Chittenden, Franklin and Lamoille counties. The items stolen and method of burglary revealed a pattern of crime, troopers said.
During the subsequent investigation, police said, they recovered many of the items stolen during the burglaries, including flat-screen televisions, computers, tools and jewelry.
Tetreault was cited last year for outstanding Vermont warrants for sexual assault, petty larceny, unlawful trespass, careless and negligent driving, and a work crew violation. Tetreault was also held on a “failure-to-appear” warrant out of New Hampshire for felony possession of heroin.
Taylor was cited for nine counts of burglary.
Tetreault and Taylor were both indicted by a federal grand jury on March 20, 2014. Tetreault pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm on Aug. 18, and that same day Taylor pleaded guilty to possessing stolen firearms.
U.S. District Court Judge William K. Sessions III, who sentenced Tetreault on March 25, also sentenced Taylor that day; he was ordered to spend 48 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
