Basketball: Eagle girls, Tiger boys win

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school basketball action earlier this week, the Mount Abraham girls and Middlebury boys each won, while the Vergennes, MUHS and Otter Valley girls came up short.
The VUHS boys also visited Mount Abe on Tuesday; see story on Page 1B.
TIGER BOYS
On Tuesday, the host Tigers bolted to a 36-17 halftime lead on the way to a 68-53 victory over Milton (4-7). The Tigers improved to 7-4 as Bryce Burrell (16 points), Sam Holmes (15), and Oakley Gordon (13) combined for 44 points.
EAGLE GIRLS
On Monday, the Eagle girls coasted past visiting Missisquoi, 52-23. The Eagles controlled from the outset and took a 29-8 halftime lead. Emma Carter led Mount Abe with 15 points, and Jesse McKean added eight as the Eagles improved to 7-5. Mount Abe was in fifth place in the Division II standings earlier this week.
VUHS GIRLS
Also on Monday, visiting South Burlington (6-6) outlasted the Commodore girls, 45-36. The 6-6 Rebels outscored the 3-8 Commodores by four points in each of the first two quarters to lead at the half, 28-20, and maintained from there. K.C. Ambrose (nine points) and Sarah Poirier-Thayer (seven) led VUHS, while Nikki Salley (eight rebounds) and Sara Stearns (seven) were strong on the boards.
Coach Billy Waller said bad news struck when junior forward Natalie Salley hurt her knee and may be lost for the long term. “She had been playing very well,” Waller said.
TIGER GIRLS
The MUHS girls on Monday nearly upset host Mount Mansfield (4-6) for their first win of the season, tying the game in the late going at 36-36 before falling in overtime, 41-38. Keagan Dunbar led the 0-11 Tigers with a game-high 18 points, and Krisandra Provencher added 12.
OTTER GIRLS
Also on Monday, the OV girls played tough defense and led host Mill River at the break, 15-9, but the 9-3 Minutemen took charge in the second half to win, 48-34. Amy Jones (13 points) and Courtney Bushey (seven) paced the 3-8 Otters.
