MUHS girls’ hockey takes over first place

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team defeated visiting North Country, 1-0, on Monday night in a game postponed from Jan. 3.
The Tigers’ outshot the Falcons, 42-4, but needed Emma Best’s goal at 10:48 of the final period to claim the victory. North Country, the first-place team in Division II at 7-3-1, got a 41-save performance from Mikaella Doran. Rowan Hendy worked a four-save shutout for the Tigers, who improved to 9-2.
That record, at least temporarily, edged them ahead of Northfield (10-2) for first place in Division I. Northfield lost to third-place Essex, 1-0, also on Monday. The Tigers were 0.08 ahead of the Marauders in the league standings on Tuesday, according to the Vermont Principals’ Association website.
MUHS is back in action on Saturday at 5 p.m., when Rice visits the Memorial Sports Center.
