Basketball: VUHS boys win; MUHS, OV girls, Mt. Abe boys lose

ADDISON COUNTY — In season-opening high school basketball action this past weekend, the Vergennes boys’ won on the road, but the Middlebury girls and Otter Valley and Mount Abraham boys all dropped home contests.
VUHS BOYS
On Saturday at Montpelier, the Commodores bolted to a 30-13 halftime lead on the way to a 58-48 win at Montpelier. The closest the Solons came in the second half came in the final minute.
Dylan Raymond led the Commodores by hitting four three-pointers on the way to a 27-point night, while center Wesley Miedema scored nine points, blocked six shots and snared four rebounds. In their varsity debuts, Adam Gill scored 11, and Josh Lorraine scored seven and grabbed six boards.
The Commodore girls were set to host Harwood on Saturday, but that game was postponed until Dec. 27
TIGER GIRLS
On Friday, visiting Winooski pulled away from the MUHS girls in the second half to win, 36-23. Freshman Keagan Dunbar scored a team-high six points in her varsity debut, and Riley Fenster (seven rebounds) and Ally Larocque (six rebounds) did good work on the boards for the Tigers. 
OV BOYS
On Friday, visiting Mill River, a team pegged as a Division II contender, outlasted the OV boys, 59-46. The Minutemen led throughout, but had to fight off repeated Otter rallies. OV cut double-digit MRU leads to two points in the second quarter, three points in the third quarter and six points midway through the fourth period. But the Minutemen hit nine of 10 fourth-quarter free throws to seal the win. John Winslow topped OV with a game-high 19 points.
EAGLE BOYS
On Friday, visiting BFA-Fairfax, another team getting preseason buzz, topped the Eagle boys, 78-23. Three Bullets reached double figures, while Coleman Russell led the Eagles with six points.
