Panther women’s hoop thumps Johnson, to host Cadets Tuesday

MIDDLEBURY — In the Panthers’ home opener this past Tuesday, the Middlebury College women’s basketball team cruised to a 73-36 win over Johnson State (0-4). The Panthers (4-1) held the Beavers to 19.6 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded them, 49-32. Middlebury returns to action this Tuesday, when it hosts Norwich.
Vs. Johnson State, the Panthers took charge with an 11-0 run in the first half that gave them a 16-4 advantage with 12:19 remaining. Middlebury later went on a 7-0 spurt capped by a three from Sabrina Weeks to open up a 17-point lead on the way to a 40-12 advantage at the break.
The Middlebury defense didn’t let up in the second half, holding Johnson without a hoop for a 10:42 span beginning at the 18:24 mark, and the lead ballooned to as many as 44.
Panther Alexis Coolidge led all scorers with 16 points, while adding seven rebounds. Elizabeth Knox made all four of her attempts from the floor and finished with 14 points, while Weeks added 11. Sarah Kaufman chipped in with seven points, nine rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
