VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Saturday issued drug citations to three teens visiting Vergennes after stopping their car on Main Street near Champlain Farms. Police pulled the car over because a check of its license plate revealed the car owner’s license had been suspended.
Police said they obtained permission to search the car after seeing signs its occupants were under the influence of drugs as well as seeing marijuana and a bag of white powder in the possession of one teen. Testing showed the powder to be cocaine, police alleged, and they said they found small quantities of marijuana.
City police cited the driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old female from Jeffersonville, for driving under the influence of drugs after an evaluation performed by the department’s Drug Recognition Expert at the Vergennes Police Station. She was also ticketed for criminal refusal to submit to DUI testing.
Vergennes police cited Kaleb Farrell, 18, of Morrisville for possession of cocaine, and they ticketed both Farrell and Jennifer Ecker, 19, of Morrisville for civil possession of marijuana.
In other incidents between Aug. 4 and 10, Vergennes police:
•  On Aug. 4 went to check a car playing loud music on South Maple Street, but it was gone.
•  On Aug. 4 responded to a report of a disabled vehicle on the Otter Creek bridge, but it was gone.
•  On Aug. 4 began investigating a case of a juvenile female receiving suggestive emails from an older man.
•  On Aug. 4 went to Northlands Job Corps to investigate a report of a sexual assault and instead cited Chelsea Dunkling, 19, of Berlin for providing false information to a police officer.
•  On Aug. 5 cited a juvenile at a New Haven Road residence for unlawful mischief after he damaged a door and a clock inside the home as well as its lawn. Police also contacted the Counseling Service of Addison County about the case.
•  On Aug. 6 told the owner of a car parked illegally in a Park Street handicap spot to move it.
•  On Aug. 6 cautioned a motorist and a cyclist involved in a road rage incident.
•  On Aug. 6 told a lawn-mowing company working at Vergennes Union High School not to operate in the early morning hours in violation of the city’s noise ordinance.
•  On Aug. 6 took a phone call from a resident of a neighboring town alleging that a family member had murdered another family member more than a decade ago. Police referred the case to Vermont State Police.
•  On Aug. 6 issued a no-trespass order to one of two Hillside Acres neighbors involved in a dispute.
•  On Aug. 6 called the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad to help a man in a car parked at Champlain Farms.
•  On Aug. 7 accepted a wallet found by a citizen and called its owner.
•  On Aug. 7 were told a bike was stolen from a Green Street home.
•  On Aug. 7 while on a special detail on Route 17 in Waltham cited Gus Yost, 21, of Lincoln for DUI.
•  On Aug. 8 ran a records check on a city resident on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security.
•  On Aug. 8 backed up Bristol police while they made an arrest on Church Street.
•  On Aug. 8 were told a utility cart had been stolen from the Gaines Insurance property on Monkton Road.
•  On Aug. 8 helped VSP by handling a one-car crash on Route 7 in Waltham.
•  On Aug. 9 cited Chelsea Barrows, 21, for DUI after stopping her car on West Street for a defective muffler.
•  On Aug. 9 went to look for a man reported to be facedown on a sidewalk. He was gone, but police found an iPhone and a pair of boots, which the man came to the station and picked up the next day.
•  On Aug. 9 were told that a customer was making a female employee of a business uncomfortable.
•  On Aug. 9 learned that a street sign had been stolen from the intersection of Panton Road and West Main Street.
•  On Aug. 9 checked a report that a dog had been left in a pickup with its windows rolled up at Shaw’s Supermarket; the truck was gone when police arrived.
•  On Aug. 9 spoke to an arguing couple at the corner of School and South Maple streets and determined it was a verbal dispute.
•  On Aug. 9 counseled a woman who said her ex-boyfriend had blocked her Ferrisburgh driveway and followed her toward Vergennes.
•  On Aug. 9 accepted a checkbook that had been left in the Bixby Library and contacted its owner.
•  On Aug. 9 found the owner of a dog running loose on Second Street and turned it over to him.
CORRECTION: An Aug. 1 incident in the Vergennes Police Log that ran in the Aug. 7 edition of the Independent erroneously identified a Ferrisburgh resident as receiving a ticket for possession of marijuana. Police Chief George Merkel said he mistakenly provided the Independent with the name, and the person who actually got the ticket was a juvenile. We regret the error.
