Local drivers competitive in Devil’s Bowl races

WEST HAVEN — After a defeat five days earlier in the Vermont State Championship opener at his hometown track, Thunder Road, Nick Sweet of Barre came back to win the People’s United Bank 100 at the Devil’s Bowl track in West Haven on Friday, leading every lap of the race.
Bristol’s Josh Masterson was seventh in that race.
Sweet’s win headlined a list of winners that included Jessey Mueller of Olmstedville, N.Y., Robert Gordon from Milton, and Chris LaVair of Gabriels, N.Y.
The top local finisher was Middlebury’s Todd Stone, who was second behind Mueller in the Bond Auto Parts Modified Feature. This came the night before Stone won a race at Airborne in Plattsburgh.
Mueller, 19, extended a winning streak in the 30-lap main event for the Modified division, upsetting Stone, who was defending track champion. Mueller has won in four of his last five starts, taking victories at Airborne Park Speedway, Thunder Road and Devil’s Bowl since May 10.  Joey Roberts of Fletcher took third. Two racers from Brandon, Vince Quenneville and Dave Snow, finished fourth and ninth, respectively.
Gordon won the two-segment season opener for the Renegade division. Stephen Donahue of Graniteville was second, with Randy Howard of Georgia in a career-best third place.
LaVair grabbed his first Central Vermont Motorcycles Mini Stock division win of the season in a 15-lap feature. Jake Noble of Benson finished second, and opening-day winner Chuck Bradford of Addison came from last place to finish third. Lacey Hanson of Orwell was 11th.
