Salisbury News: Town office hours down, landfill rates up

SALISBURY — Town Clerk Ann Dittami has announced a reduction in office hours. The town office will be open on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The office will be closed on Monday, May 26, for Memorial Day.
Prices at the Salisbury landfill will increase beginning June 1. Punch cards will cost $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents. Bag prices for those not having punch cards will be $2.50 for residents and $4 for non-residents; cash only. Punch cards may be purchased at the town office or at the landfill; checks only at the landfill, no cash. The landfill is now open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Christine Turner, town Green Up coordinator, announced that more than 25 residents, the Salisbury 4-H Swamp Riders, the Salisbury Community School “Girls on the Run” and students from the school volunteered their time to participate in Green Up. Preliminary counts show that 153 bags, nine tires, and 10 large items were brought to the landfill by volunteer truck drivers. Christine wishes to thank all those who helped keep our community clean.
This week is the last of the mentoring program “Everybody Wins!” for this school year at the community school. Adult volunteers have spent an hour each week with their student to read books, play board games and enjoy learning about each other. The program will continue next year. If you would like to become a student’s friend contact the school, 352-4291; there are more children waiting for a mentor.
During the two-day bird-a-thon at the school last week the students identified 27 species of birds with the help of members of the Otter Creek Audubon Society. The results of the weekend bird-a-thon by the students and their families will be available next week.
Members of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra visited the school last week and taught the students about reed instruments such as the clarinet, bassoon and oboe. They also played some pieces on these instruments for the students.
The fifth- and sixth-grade students at the school will be on their class trip to Boston this Thursday and Friday, May 22 and 23. School will be closed on Monday, May 26, for Memorial Day.
