Opinion: Middlebury cannot afford to throw away $5.5 million
The new location for town offices, in accordance with the town plan, keeps the offices downtown; the office building design is efficient and welcoming. The new location for the municipal gymnasium nestled among athletic fields is incredibly convenient for students at Mary Hogan, the middle school and the high school. The plan which was passed is a good one for the town of Middlebury now and well into the future, and most importantly, it is one we can afford.
What we cannot afford to do is to throw away $5.5 million. It flies in the face of common sense. Our property taxes are at a breaking point. There will be increases we can’t avoid, but funding the total price for new town offices and a municipal gymnasium is not one. How would we fund this yet-to-be-imagined superior plan? Should we keep throwing away money and wasting energy on a building beyond repair?
We voted for a great sensible plan for our future and we need to vote for it again. Let’s move forward; let’s solve our needs with fiscal responsibility and with two imaginative and efficient buildings that will serve us well. Vote yes on Article 1.
