Opinion: Pipeline to N.Y. a terrible idea

After reading the April 14 Addison Independent article titled “Phase II pipeline clears ACRPC hurdle,” we send our thanks to those of you on the commission who voted against this and its negative impact on so many Addison County residents.
To those of you who voted for it, we ask why? Why did you vote in favor of helping an already known polluter of Lake Champlain, International Paper Co., put in a gas line that is likely at some point to have some sort of accident in the lake and cause even more pollution? They were the same company who wanted to burn tires and send that pollution right over the lake to their good neighbors in Vermont, remember? Wouldn’t it have made sense to support your many neighbors in Vermont who will not benefit from this gas line at all but will be hurt when their land is used by Vermont Gas?
ACRPC’s own Energy and Act 250/Act 248 committees voted against approving Phase II, but those of you who voted for Phase II didn’t acknowledge their very important input. There’s something wrong here.
Barbie Carnwath’s letter in the same edition of the Independent was excellent. You who voted for Phase II should note, along with those of us who agree with her, that you now have a credibility problem.
