Stone set to defend title at N.Y. track
SOUTH PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Middlebury racecar driver Todd Stone will launch his bid for a third straight Airborne Park Speedway track title on May 3.
Stone is the two-time defending Ernie’s Tools DIRTcar 358-Modified champion at the South Plattsburgh track, and he will make his 2014 debut in the Econo Lodge 50-lap main event at the speedway’s 61st season opener on that Saturday. According to a track press release, Stone is the only Modified driver to win back-to-back Airborne championships since the DIRTcar 358-Modified era began in 2005.
Stone drove his G Stone Motors No. 1x to seven wins in 2013 to claim his second consecutive track title and move into a 4th-place tie on the Airborne 358-Modified all-time win list with 2013 Runner-up Leon Gonyo and former track champion and current competition director Mike Bruno.
Airborne’s 61st season will be its first as a NASCAR-sanctioned Whelen All-American Series facility.
The opening-day schedule includes the J&S Steel Sportsman Modifieds, Key RD Trailer Sales Renegades and Busch Mini Modifieds and begins at 5 p.m.
Beginning May 17, DIRTcar Modified drivers will be eligible to race against the NASCAR-sanctioned Sportsman Modifieds in a set of eight bonus feature races, either in their Modified cars equipped with a restrictor plate or with a Sportsman car.
The 2014 Enduro/Demo Derby has been set for Friday, May 16, at 7 p.m. Airborne will host the ACT 100, the fourth event of the 2014 American Canadian Late Model Tour on May 17. Ticket stubs from the Enduro/Demo Derby event are worth $2 off general admission tickets for the ACT 100.
