Eagle golf, senior Jona Scott having good month

MIDDLEBURY — The Mount Abraham Union High School golf team won a pair of matches earlier this month, and senior Jona Scott earned medalist honors in both outings. Scott has been the medalist in three of the Eagles’ matches this spring.
The Eagles defeated Rice, 354-361, on May 1 in a two-team match at Middlebury College’s Ralph Myhre Golf Course.
Scott fired a 75 on his home course to beat runner-up Caleb Connerty of Rice by five strokes.
Freshman Carson Sanchez had the next best score for Mount Abe, carding an 83, followed by senior Matt Sweeney, 89; senior Reg Valley, 106; and junior Eric Raymond, 119.
On May 6 in Burlington, the Eagles dispatched Mount Mansfield, 355-381. Golfers from Rice and Missisquoi also competed, but neither school fielded full four-man teams.
Scott’s 74 easily was the day’s best score. Sanchez provided his closest competition by carding an 83, with Sweeney right behind at 84. Valley completed the Eagle scorers with a 114.
On Tuesday, Scott shot a 79 at the Barre Country Club and settled for a second-place finish behind Spaulding’s Troy Evans, who fired a 74.
Sanchez shot an 82 and Sweeney came in at 92, but Valley was disqualified and the Eagles did not score as a team.
