MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police assisted two local men who had been targeted in two separate scam attempts on Oct. 14. One of the men was told to deposit money into an account as part of a proposed Craigslist transaction. The other man was told to wire money to Nigeria to allegedly help an orphanage. Police said the men were fortunate to have emerged financially unscathed in both matters.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Investigated a fraud complaint in the Drew Lane area on Oct. 8.
•  Were informed that someone had stolen a purse that had been placed on a walker in front of a North Pleasant Street apartment building on Oct. 8.
•  Received a report on Oct. 8 that someone had stolen a digital camera and video camera from a Jayne Court apartment.
•  Responded to a noise complaint in the Park Street area on Oct. 9.
•  Assisted a local woman in getting her truant child to Middlebury Union High School on Oct. 10.
•  Were informed that someone had stolen a woman’s wallet from a vehicle while it was parked at McDonald’s Restaurant on Route 7 South on Oct. 10.
•  Ticketed a youth for being a minor in possession of tobacco at the Christian Valley Academy campus in Catamount Park on Oct. 10.
•  Found an abandoned bicycle off Route 7 South on Oct. 11. Police were able to trace the bike to its rightful owner in the John Graham Court development.
•  Received into evidence a folded paper containing white powder that a local resident had found abandoned in a Court Street business on Oct. 11.
•  Cited Gregory E. Raymond, 23, of Middlebury for driving under the influence, following an alleged traffic infraction on College Street on Oct. 12.
•  Spoke to some people that had pitched some tents on private property off Weybridge Street on Oct. 12. Police said the temporary tent-dwellers were helping someone build a nearby house.
•  Were informed of an attempted scam on Oct. 12. Police said a woman was informed by phone that she had won a $150,000 Publishers Clearing House prize and that she only needed to hand over a $150 check to the unmarked vehicle that was going to drop off the prize. Police are investigating the matter.
•  Responded, with ambulance and fire officials, to the scene of a one-car rollover with unknown injuries at the intersection of Case Street and Lindale Circle on Oct. 12.
•  Served a no-trespass order on a man who had been involved in a fight at Two Brothers Tavern on Main Street on Oct. 13.
•  Investigated a trespassing complaint at the Veterans of Foreign Wars headquarters on Exchange Street on Oct. 13.
•  Cited Eric J. Pezzulo, 32, of East Sandwich, Mass., for driving under the influence, following a stop for an alleged traffic infraction on North Pleasant Street on Oct. 14.
