City council readies for celebration
VERGENNES —Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday officially renamed a city-owned cemetery on Mountain View Lane the “Vergennes Burying Ground.”
In other business, aldermen:
• Went into an executive session to discuss potential purchases of properties for a new police station. City Manager Mel Hawley said on Wednesday that per the laws governing such sessions “no minutes were taken,” and no decisions were made after the session.
• Heard from Mayor Michael Daniels that parking for Friday afternoon’s welcoming celebration for the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum canal schooner Lois McClure will be available at the Town & Country Self Storage business on Panton Road, and that a bus would run to the Otter Creek basin, where the ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. Dignitaries from Vermont, New York and Canada are expected to speak in an event that will focus on the city’s role in the War of 1812 as well as the Lois McClure.
• Heard from Hawley that the deadline for those interested in applying for openings on the city’s planning commission and board of listers is Oct. 19. Hawley said longtime former zoning official Mark Hattler recently resigned as a lister after moving out of the city.
• Heard a concern from Alderman Peter Garon about the police department’s license plate reader, which police use to scan for improperly assigned or out-of-use plates, or those assigned to drivers with suspended licenses. The readers also scan all license plates, however, and some have questioned their use on privacy and safety concerns. Garon wanted to know how data collected by the reader was stored and who had access to it, questions Hawley said he could not immediately answer, but would pursue.
