Wrestlers take titles at Tiger meet

A deep Otter Valley wrestling team claimed second place out of 19 teams at last week’s 50th annual Hubie Wagner Invitational Tournament in Middlebury as the team champions.

The Middlebury Area Wrestling Association team on Saturday claimed its second straight Vermont Youth Wrestling State Championship, with four 3rd-to-6th-grade MAWA wrestlers earning individual titles.

Second-place finishes by Mount Abe’s Devan Hemingway at 120 pounds and Vergennes’s Taylor Stearns at 152 highlighted local wrestlers’ efforts on Saturday at a tournament hosted by Vergennes Union High School.

Wrestlers from Middlebury, Mount Abraham, Otter Valley and Vergennes union high schools all posted top-six finishes at this past Saturday’s Michael J. Baker Classic tournament, hosted by Essex High School.

A Hubie Wagner Invitational annual wrestling tournament revamped to account for COVID-19 saw 10 teams compete in a series of dual meets in two shifts.

The Middlebury Union High School wrestling team was the top local squad at Saturday’s invitational tournament in Granville, N.Y., as five Tigers earned podium finishes and MUHS, with 80 points, placed sixth out of 14 teams.

Several members of the Otter Valley wrestling team fared well in a Saturday tournament hosted by Northern Adirondack High School, including junior Caleb Whitney, who won the 138-pound weight class.
