Joan of Arc revives live opera in Middlebury

September 23, 2021

Tchaikovsky called it “my masterpiece,” and yet his opera about Joan of Arc has virtually disappeared since its debut in 1881.Why?“Epic is the best word for this score,” explained Opera Company of Middlebury’s music director Michael Sakir. “This is balls to the walls, in your face and aggressive, with huge voices competing with each other on stage… This production is so rarely performed because of the level of talent needed. It takes incredible stamina.”But OCM isn’t intimidated. Nope, quite the opposite. T … (read more)

Did you see Ed the dog at the Memorial Day parade?
Did you see Ed the dog at the Memorial Day parade? He's a good boy and he's running for Mayor of Middlebury.

The Dog for Mayor campaign is a fundraiser for Homeward Bound, @homewardboundanimals, in honor of the shelter's 50th Anniversary. Nominations are open until May 30. The dog with the most votes will be sworn in at the Middlebury town offices on June 16.

The Dog Mayor will be responsible for regular check-ins at the town offices, leading the annual Walk for the Animals on September 6, promoting local dog adoption, and serving as ambassador for rabies and registration campaigns, as well as for the Middlebury Dog Park.

Canine candidates must live in Middlebury, be spayed/neutered, have up-to-date shots, love people and pups, and—importantly—have no criminal record.

To nominate your dog:
Send a headshot, campaign slogan, and a short summary of qualifications to:

Heavy rains over the weekend caused the slope buttressing West Street in Bristol to slide away, causing concern that the road could be unstable. Expect delays and potential detours today as repair efforts proceed on the road, which is also known as Route 116 and 17. The landslide occurred directly across from Martin’s Hardware, which is located at 68 West St.

“What gives me the most pleasure is seeing multiple generations playing together, watching dad playing the Star Wars machine he played as a kid, next to his daughter. Or mom playing air hockey with her son,” said Christian Bloom, who recently opened an old-school arcade called the Retro Realm in Middlebury. “That’s the greatest thing I can possibly see, and the smiles on their faces when they leave.”
