Pieciak unveils $20M housing program

State Treasurer Mike Pieciak joined state and local leaders on Tuesday at Vergennes Grand Senior Living to announce an additional $20 million investment in housing and economic development projects across the state.

After multiple years of planning and permitting, the largest subdivision in Middlebury’s history is quickly moving from two-dimensional drawings to vertical construction on a 30-acre site off Seminary Street Extension.

Vermont just took a bold, historic step toward solving one of the most urgent issues facing our state: the lack of affordable and attainable homes for Vermonters of all income levels and backgrounds.

As a resident of the South Ridge development, I am strongly opposed to the plans for the 4-story apartment building that is being proposed for the small corner lot next to the Dollar Market on Route 7.

A Pennsylvania attorney and developer is proposing a 32-unit, four-story apartment building — that would also host a restaurant — on a 0.71-acre lot near the intersection of Middle Road and Route 7, at Middlebury’s southern gateway.

Lawmakers had hoped the temporary carve-outs would help ease Vermont’s acute housing shortage. Developers are using the new exemptions in at least a dozen locations across the state.

The regulatory and municipal zoning changes, tax proposals and funding in bills H.719 and S.311 would make it easier and faster to build more housing while avoiding sprawl.
