Field hockey: Otter Valley was the only winner

In local high school field hockey action between Sept. 14 and 20 Mount Abraham earned a home tie, Otter Valley split two games and Middlebury dropped a pair of Metro Conference contests.

As the high school field hockey season got under way, Mount Abraham and Otter Valley resumed their winning ways, while a young Tiger team took its lumps on the road.

Following in the footsteps of a coach who led the program for three decades and racked up 11 state titles in the past 21 years, including four straight through 2021, offers a challenge for whoever takes over.

Middlebury College Head Field Hockey Coach Katharine DeLorenzo has been selected as a member of the 2022 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Hall of Fame induction class.

The young women were selected as the five best field hockey players from two field hockey camps that Middlebury College coach Katharine DeLorenzo led in 2018 and 2020 in the city of Ranchi.

Fourteen field hockey players from Mount Abraham, Otter Valley and Middlebury union high schools were awarded postseason recognition by their leagues’ coaches, while three members of the Division II champion Eagles were singled out for extra honors.

The field hockey program Mary Stetson built at Mount Abraham Union High School is legendary.

The top-seeded Middlebury College field hockey team on Sunday survived one of its toughest challenges of the season, coming back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat No. 3 seed Bowdoin, 4-3, in the NESCAC final.

Top-seeded Mount Abraham and No. 2 Hartford battled on even terms for three quarters of Saturday’s Division II field hockey championship game, and the score was 1-1. But the Eagles proved they were the better team when it mattered.
