Girls’ soccer: Eagles reach final

In local high school girls’ soccer postseason action, the biggest news was Mount Abraham, the No. 7 seed in Division II, won twice — once over No. 10 Middlebury in the first round — to reach the semifinal round against a traditional playoff rival.

The MUHS girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams finished 3rd and 5th, respectively, in the D-II Cross Country Championships in Thetford on Saturday. Estella Laird was the top female in all divisions.

The tension that has arisen in Panton town government boiled over on Sept. 23 when the top local elected official stormed out of a contentious selectboard meeting.

Many of the 20 or more Panton residents who have attended recent town selectboard meetings have complained about the town’s rising spending and its accounting practices.

Panton Town Clerk and Treasurer Maggie McCormick gave verbal notice to the town selectboard at its Oct. 16 meeting that she will step down from her position, effective on Nov. 22.

Only the Mount Abraham boys’ soccer team survived first-round playoff action on Tuesday, as the sixth-seeded Eagles prevailed at home in a Division II matchup.

The Otter Valley field hockey team on Sunday morning received the No. 3 seed in the Division II playoffs and a bye into the quarterfinal round. The 8-4-2 Otters will host No. 6 Burr & Burton on Friday at 3 p.m.

The Mount Abraham and Otter Valley girls’ soccer teams each earned first-round home games in the Division II high school playoffs when seeds were awarded this week, and the Eagles were set to entertain county foe Middlebury in the first round.

In a typically hard-fought duel on Saturday between the rivals, the host Eagles earned a 2-0 victory over the Commodores in what was the final regular season game for both squads.
