Democracy amid foliage
The build-up to the Nov. 3 midterm elections was on full display in Addison County on Saturday, Oct. 17, when folks gathered in Middlebury and Bristol to encourage voting in No Kings-themed demonstrations. There was a great turnout with more than 100 citizens young and old coming to the Middlebury town green for a non-partisan celebration of voting and people-powered, grassroots action. The group, some of them dressed as Edwardian-era Suffragettes, marched down South Pleasant Street, across the Cross Street Bridge and to the Middlebury town offices, to deposit ballots in the voting box there. Participants emphasized that if they weren’t happy with the way government is currently being run, they needed to cast their ballots either early, or in person, on Election Day. Way to go, Starksboro!
Starksboro’s grades 5/6 soccer team, the defending champion, did it again. They went undefeated on Monday, Oct. 19, to win the 5 Town Cup for the 2nd year. The other teams playing were Monkton, Bristol Girls, Bristol boys and Lincoln. The Starksboro 11 are justifiably excited to hoist the trophy. They were led by coach Tyler Johnson. Photo courtesy of Erin Buckwalter
Hanging hues
The fall foliage isn’t all that’s blowing in the autumn breeze in Addison County. A resident has turned to the eco-friendly and energy efficient mode of drying wet garments — the clothesline. Independent photo/Steve James
