The theme comes straight from local history. In October 1862, bandits swept through town and made off with $30 in silver from a resident named Marcellus Royce. The race starts with the blast of a conch shell, a nod to an early settler who was the only man in town with a clock and used it to call evening prayers. Every finisher collects a wooden token, and this year’s is an “R” for the country’s 250th, tying into Orwell’s Revolutionary War history. Overall winners take home a custom award representing that stolen $30. Proceeds benefit the Orwell Village School Booster Club and the Orwell Historical Museum
