Letter to the editor: Schools need mask mandate
We have learned some very important lessons in the past months when it comes to educating our children. One is that nothing, not even the remarkable efforts of our teachers and administrators last year, can replace the human connection that comes from in-person learning.
A second and more recent lesson is that ambivalent messages, such as suggesting that the unvaccinated wear masks in public places, create confusion, anxiety and resentment. A strong, consistent and uniform message that insures safety reduces anxiety and confusion.
For this reason I hope the superintendents in Vermont require all students and staff to wear a mask while in school; any inconvenience will be outweighed by insuring safety and uniformity.
