Vergennes to honor city clerk for her service

JOAN DEVINE

VERGENNES — Friday, Feb. 28, has been declared “Joan Devine Day” by the Vergennes mayor in honor of the city’s long-serving clerk, who at the end of that workday will retire.
Mayor Jeff Fritz signed a mayoral proclamation to that effect on Tuesday and announced it at that night’s Vergennes City Council meeting.
Devine has served as Vergennes clerk and treasurer since 1982 and worked in Vergennes City Hall for several years before then, and has worked in her position longer than any other currently serving clerk in the county. She has pledged to return and help out during next week’s Presidential primary.
The proclamation reads:
“WHEREAS, Joan Devine has been employed by the City of Vergennes since July 1, 1978; and
WHEREAS, Joan Devine has served as City Clerk for 38 of those years, establishing her as the longest serving Municipal Clerk in Addison County, Vermont; and
WHEREAS, on February 28, 2020, Joan Devine will retire from her post as City Clerk/Treasurer; and
WHEREAS, the City of Vergennes recognizes Joan Devine’s many years of faithful, professional and dedicated service in municipal government and her unyielding commitment to the City of Vergennes; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Council wish to extend their gratitude for her many years of dedication to the City of Vergennes;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Jeffrey Fritz, Mayor of Vergennes, do hereby proclaim Friday, February 28, 2020, JOAN DEVINE DAY in the City of Vergennes, Vermont, and urge the citizens of Vergennes to express their thanks in person at Vergennes City Hall on that date.”
