HARLEY B. MUZZY

RUPERT — Harley B. Muzzy, 72, of Rupert, Vt., passed away August 9, 2026. A lifelong Vermonter, Harley was born Jan. 7, 1954, at the family home in North Ferrisburgh, Vt., to Basil and Lois Muzzy.

He graduated from Vergennes Union High School, where he was an accomplished baseball player. While attending the Addison Central Vocational Center in Middlebury, Harley specialized in auto mechanics. Under the guidance of his teacher, Ed Stanley, Harley and his partner won a troubleshooting competition, earning the opportunity to compete at the national competition in Los Angeles, Calif. The competition required them to diagnose a problem with a car, make the necessary repairs, and successfully drive it. They won the competition and returned to Vermont with a large trophy.

Harley owned and operated Roger’s Snack Bar, now known as Goodies. In 1975, he built his own home. In the 1980s, he started his own business, Muzzy’s Arco, which later become Muzzy’s Sunoco. After retiring from the business, Harley moved to Rupert, Vt.

His interests included stamp collecting and, after retirement, building birdhouses. He was a fan of the Beach Boys and the Eagles. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, Little League baseball, and watching basketball player Caitlin Clark.

Harley is survived by his sons, Patrick Muzzy of New Haven, Vt., and Nicholas Muzzy of Roanoke, Va.; his grandchildren, Jarret, Nathan, Reese, Morgan, and Megan; his brother, Louis Muzzy and his wife, Kitty, of Vergennes; his sister, Marsha Hewitt and her husband, Curt, of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Muzzy of North Ferrisburgh, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Basil Muzzy in 1990 and Lois Muzzy in 1999; his sister, Phyllis Counter, in 2002; his brother, Frank Muzzy, in 2002; and his brother, George Muzzy, in 2013.

He will be remembered for his mechanical ingenuity, independent spirit, and the pride he took in his work and hobbies. ◊
