BRISTOL — Harold Bruce ‘Hal’ Jenkins passed away Oct. 16, 2026, due to a stroke. He was born Oct. 8, 1936, and was happy to celebrate his 90th birthday surrounded by friends and family.
He was born in Graniteville, Vt., to Hester and Alfred Jenkins, and was the third of six sons. Hal was a man of many skills and talents, and our homes are graced by his paintings and woodworking. Through the years many homes and businesses were built, lighted or warmed by his contributions. He worked as a test technician and electronics and equipment engineer; a maintenance supervisor for Vermont Forest and Parks; a wastewater plant operator; and an electrician. Hal was most proud of his service in the U.S. Navy and of South Mountain Sawyers — his final profession and business.
In his youth, Hal met and married Evelyn Thornton and together raised three children: Terri, Bruce and David, who predeceased him in 2007. In his later life he met and partnered with Leslie Leggett of Bristol and they spent over thirty years together, until his death. He is survived by his children Terri and Bruce (Karen); his grandchildren, Parker and William; and many close friends and associates.
Hal was a happy, funny and generous man who delighted in the natural world and his many friends and family. He spent much time helping others building and repairing homes, vehicles, tools, machinery and anything else he was asked to help with. His favorite place was anywhere in the woods, especially in the fall, during deer season. He spent many hours and years sharing the joy with others. He will be greatly missed.
There will be no services at this time — the family intends to hold a memorial gathering in the spring. Any communications may be sent care of the Family of Harold Jenkins, 148 Manley Road, Milton, VT 05468.◊
