MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury High School (MHS), Middlebury Union High School (MUHS) Alumni Association is asking alumni to support a change to its by-laws, by identifying and adding additional scholarship opportunities for graduating MUHS seniors.
The current scholarship opportunities are only open to graduating seniors who have a parent graduate from MUHS. The class of 1943 gifted money to the alumni association to provide scholarship opportunities. Although the criteria for the scholarship were not defined in the by-laws, the legacy criteria of the scholarship gift continued.
Early scholarship amounts were $500 and limited to one or two students. The alumni association was established in 1989, and scholarships have been awarded since the formation of the association in increasing amounts. At an annual meeting in 2016, the members present asked the directors to increase the amount and the number of scholarships awarded. The association currently awards five $2,000 scholarships to graduating seniors at MUHS who also had a parent graduate from MUHS.
It is proposed that Section 8, “Scholarship Funds,” be amended by the consent of MHS/MUHS Alumni Association members present at the annual meeting to say:
“The Alumni Association may establish and award additional scholarships to graduating seniors. Unless otherwise specified in the eligibility requirements established for a particular scholarship, such scholarships shall be available to graduating seniors without regard to whether a parent or other family member previously attended the school. The number of scholarships and amounts of the scholarship are determined by the directors and presented for adoption at an annual meeting.”
The Association’s scholarship fund has grown through the years thanks to the generosity of alumni, graduated classes, golf tournaments and local businesses. The MHS/MUHS Alumni Association will be launching a capital campaign to increase the scholarship fund to coincide with this year’s annual meeting. The annual meeting will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Middlebury American Legion, beginnning at 2 p.m.
