Monkton News: Yoga and more at the library

MONKTON — Join Lisa Boekman at the Community room of the Monkton Town Hall for an hour of yoga 9-10 a.m. on Aug. 8. Your appreciated donation will benefit the Russell Memorial Library. All you need to bring is a yoga mat. Call the library at 802-453-4471 if you have questions.

More fun happening at the library will continue as part of the summer theme with “Project Micro with Jan Schwartz” on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. till noon. Children will be fascinated at the hidden details of life with microscopes and hand lenses while inspecting rocks, sand, bones and sea life. They will even get a free hand lens to take home.

A busy Saturday, Aug. 8, continues with “Crafter-ernoon with Catherine” starting at 1 p.m. Children will hear a story or two about insects and make mud and worms dessert cups!  Contact the library for more information.  Also check to see if Storytime continues every Wednesday at the library.

Then join Eugenie Doyle for Ashtanga Yoga on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the library. Contact her at [email protected] for questions.

On Monday, Aug. 10, beginning at 7 p.m., you are invited to join friends and neighbors for a performance by Paul Lyons at the East Monkton Church, 405 Church Road.

Paul is a local musician who was born and raised in Chicago. He started playing piano as a youngster, played keyboards in local bands in high school, and studied music in college. He earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Illinois in 2014. He moved to Vermont in 2016, and moved to Monkton in 2022. As a musician and teacher, he has continued to explore and develop his passion for music and instill that passion in others. He plays solo piano and keyboards with many local bands, including the Lara Cwass Band, Bodacious, Mothership, and Coop. He also writes and records his own music, and in 2024 he released his first full-length solo album, which received great reviews in Seven Days. If you have questions about this event contact Candace Polzella at 802-453-7575.

Lauren Parren of Monkton Museum and Historical Society advised that the “soft” opening of the new museum exhibit last week was a big success. Nearly 50 people attended the opening and enjoyed the presentation by Chief Don Stevens, followed by a museum tour. The theme “Choices and Changes: the Early People of Monkton” will continue to grow as they add to the stories of three people living in or near Monkton at the time of the Revolution. A big thank you to all who attended!

Watch for information on August’s speaker Angie Grove, who is the executive director of the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum and will give a presentation on Aug. 17. Also check with the town clerk or librarian about getting a Monkton Button and what it’s all about.

Samantha Champagne of Champagne’s Black Belt Academy is starting weekly classes of taekwondo at the Monkton Town Hall Community Room on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 5-5:45 p.m. This will be a family class for all from age 6 plus. A household member discount will be 10% off of a monthly membership for additional household members. If you are curious about trying taekwondo, she will set up a free class for you to try out. Contact Samantha at [email protected] or call 802-730-3015
