ORWELL/SHOREHAM — The Tuesday night storm that weather forecasters had warned could bring winds up to 75 mph with a possibility of some tornadoes and large hail largely spared Addison County, but hit isolated spots in Shoreham and Orwell. Meteorologist Allison Black at WCAX in Burlington reported Shoreham, Orwell, Brandon and Pittsford all reported “some tree damage, including trees on power lines blocking Route 7 in Pittsford,” which were cleared shortly afterwards.

Shoreham couple Adrian Daley and Johannes Nel were also featured on WCAX’s Instagram telling how they moved away from an upstairs bedroom window of their rural home just seconds before lightning and high winds struck a nearby tree, which crashed on top of their barn and sent a tree branch through their bedroom window scattering shards of glass into the room.

Nel told WCAX he and his wife were able to react quickly and jump out of the way, receiving only a few scratches.

“Light flashing and then there was a really bright flash and at that moment I grabbed my wife and said let’s get away from the window. Right as we jumped away, lightning hit and blew our whole window on top of us and some of the glass got our arms,” Nel told WCAX.

Elsewhere throughout the region, Essex County in the Northeast Kingdom saw early reports of high winds and uprooted trees along with 1-inch hail around 6 p.m., followed by high winds and ping-pong ball sized hail on the New Hampshire-Vermont border at 9:30 p.m. Around midnight, storms rolled into St. Lawrence County, N.Y., leaving a trail of downed and uprooted trees and hail larger than 2.75 inches in diameter in Hermon, N.Y.

That same storm system moved southeast into Vermont where it hit Shoreham, Orwell, Brandon and Pittsford, knocking trees onto power lines and causing service disruptions.
