Eugene ‘Gene’ Emery Ethier, 80, of Cornwall

EUGENE “GENE” EMERY ETHIER

CORNWALL — With hope and assurance found in Jesus, we celebrate the life of Eugene “Gene” Emery Ethier, who entered into the presence of the Lord June 22, 2026, at the age of 80. While our hearts grieve his passing, we rejoice in the promise of eternal life and give thanks for a life well lived.

Born July 3, 1945, in Rutland Vt. to Emery and Cora Ethier, Gene lived a life marked by a strong work ethic and dedication to his wife of 53 years, Janice (Wood) Ethier, and their four boys.

Gene was raised on the family farm. His passion for farming continued throughout his entire lifetime as he and his family managed farms in Hyde Park, Vt., and Pt. MacKenzie, Alaska, ultimately purchasing and settling on his own farm in Cornwall, Vt., in 1990. Gene also worked as a projectionist at local drive-in theaters for decades (Skyline in Crown Point and Mid-Haven in New Haven). He shared many fond memories of the “good ole days” at the drive-ins, like when teens would pile into car trunks to avoid paying (60 cents per person)! Gene also worked at the Marquis Theater (formerly Campus Cinema), spanning many decades — well into the late 2000s.

Later in life he could be found every day down in his shop tinkering on anything mechanical — his main passion was mostly engines. He was a mechanical genius and loved fixing things, especially when most people said it was not possible.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Emery Ethier and Cora (Chartrand) Ethier; He is survived by his wife, Janice (Wood) Ethier; son Matthew (Jennifer) Ethier and Matthew’s step-daughter Maya Jacobs of Middlebury, Vt.; son Nathan (Chelsea) Ethier and granddaughter Emery of Atlanta Ga.; son Jesse (Rachel) Ethier and granddaughters Annanya and Alaya of East Middlebury Vt.; and Jason Ethier of Cornwall, Vt.; sister Madelyn (Dick) Gardner; and brothers Richard (Karon) Ethier, and Jeff (Laura) Ethier. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunt, uncle and friends.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Bridport. The Rev. Fr. Brandon C. Schnieder, pastor, will officiate.

Graveside committal services and interment will follow in St. Genevieve’s Cemetery, Shoreham.

Following the graveside service a reception will follow at a location to be announced.

Arrangements are by Miller & Ketcham of Brandon.◊
