Boys’ tennis finds their game; girls crush theirs

MIDDLEBURY — The sun shone on the Middlebury Union High School boys’ tennis team on Friday, at least metaphorically, as they downed visiting Harwood and won all five contested matches. Champlain Valley Union, however, proved to be a tougher nut to crack on Saturday as the Tigers came away with only two winning singles matches and fell to the Division I power, 5-2.
But the Tiger boys bounced back with a 5-2 win over U-32 in Middlebury on Monday. A Wednesday rematch vs. U-32 was played Wednesday after deadline for this section.
Meanwhile, MUHS girls’ tennis won three times over the past week, defeating BFA-St. Albans, 7-0, on May 6; Harwood, 6-1, on May 7; and Spaulding, 6-1, on Monday.
This past Friday when the boys hosted Harwood, Tiger No. 1 player Andy Giorgio set the tone by defeating Highlander Cole Baitz, 7-5, 6-1. At No. 2, singles Kellan Bartlett saw less of a fight, winning over Cole Deschamps, 6-2, 6-0.
In the balance of the matches the Tigers did not drop a game during singles plan and only lost one game during doubles play.
The Tiger winners were Clyde Malhotra and Aidan Chance. The doubles team of Oliver Poduschnick and Aiden Cole won, 6-1, 6-0.
Then CVU came to town on Saturday, and the Tigers played many tiebreakers.
Giorgio put up a good battle at No. 1 singles before falling to Ethan Gisle, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.
Two Tigers prevailed. No. 2 Clyde Malhotra defeated Charlie Mjaanes, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8; and at No. 5 Tiger Abel Anderson prevailed over Jack Biggins, 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.
Tigers on the losing end were Kellan Bartlett at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-3) and Aidan Chance at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-3).
Versus U-32 on Monday, an excellent No. 1 singles player for U-32 defeated Tiger boys’ No. 1 Andy Giorgio; but MUHS won most of the other matches. The results were:
Singles
1. Lasse Lieberman U-32 def. Giorgio MUHS 6-0, 6-2.
2. Malhotra MUHS def. Kayl Humke U-32 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.
3. Bartlett MUHS def. Tzeri Schwarts U-32 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.

Middlebury girls’ tennis on Thursday blanked BFA-St. Albans, 7-0.
In singles play, the winning Tigers were Scarlett Carrara, Julia Bartlett, Abby Bailey, Elizabeth Bright and Paige Hescock. The duo of Lois Alberts and Emma Franklin also prevailed.
On Friday, Harwood showed a little more fight, with their No. 1 player, Julia Befmann defeating Middlebury’s Carrara, 6-1, 6-1. The other Tigers won, resulting in a 6-1 final score. The winners were Bartlett, Bailey and Bright, Hescock in singles, and the doubles duos of Franklin/Alberts and Gwen Trombley/Bridget Graham.
In Monday’s 6-1 win over Spaulding, the MUHS winners were singles: Carrara (6-2, 6-2), Bartlett (6-1, 6-1), Bright (6-1, 7-5); and doubles: Franklin/ Alberts (6-4, 6-2), and Trombley/ Graham (6-3, 6-2). Tiger Aby Bailey lost (6-1, 6-2).
