VERNON N. RILEY JR.

EAST MIDDLEBUTY — Vernon N. Riley Jr., of East Middlebury, Vt., born on Dec. 9, 1946. in Lebanon, Pa., to the late Mary and Vernon Riley Sr., passed away on March 12 after a long cancer illness. Vern was the oldest of three; sister Carolyn (Danyow) Riley, 16 months younger, and five-years-younger brother David.
Vern was married to his wife Yvonne Mary (Quesnel) for 38 years.
Vern graduated from MUHS Class of 1964, then joined the U.S. Navy that fall. After basic training at Great Lakes, Ill., he attended Naval School Training and served as a photographic interpreter of aerial photography during the Vietnam War aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Constellation CVA-64.
He was employed at the Kraft Cheese factory in Middlebury for 17 years, and then worked 15 years at Middlebury College as the night watchman, and six years as the goal judge at all of the home hockey games, which he loved, before retiring in 2010.
Vern had a passion for all sports, especially golf, which he learned from his Dad starting at six years old. His early years of golf were played at the Middlebury College course and he played on the high school golf team schooled by George “Dud” Phinney Sr. Later years he played at Neshobe Golf Club and worked for Pro Rodney Bicknell, playing in many golf tournaments with his friends.
Vern and Yvonne were very proud of taking care of and making a nice home for Nelson Audy, who came to them by way of Addison County Counseling Service.
He finished his working days as a part-time office helper for his lifelong friend Roger Paquette at Paquette Inc.
All are welcome to attend a celebration of life at the American Legion at a date to be announced later this year.
Arrangements under the direction of Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home. On-line condolences at sandersonfuneralservice.com. ◊
