Girls’ basketball: VUHS, MUHS, OV net wins

ADDISON COUNTY — In local girls’ high school basketball play in the past week Vergennes won twice to remain unbeaten, Middlebury broke into the win column, Otter Valley split two games, and Mount Abraham dropped a pair of contests.

The Commodores’ two victories moved them to 4-0 at the halfway point of the COVID-shortened season. As of midweek they were tied with Lake Region for the Division III lead.
On Feb. 18 the Commodores topped host Missisquoi, 34-20, behind what Coach Billy Waller called another strong defensive effort. VUHS led at the half, 17-4. Kate Gosliga paced the Commodores with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Felicia Poirier recorded six points, three assists, six steals and seven rebounds.
On Monday the Commodores pulled away in the second half to defeat host Winooski, 52-23. VUHS outscored the Spartans 28-7 after the break. Eight Commodores scored at least four points, led by Gosliga (12), Sydney Jewell (eight) and Morgan Jewell and Poirier (seven apiece).

On Monday, the host Tigers had their way with winless Milton, 53-21. Sophomores Ele Sellers and Cady Pitner scored 11 points apiece to lead MUHS, which evened its record at 1-1 and gave new Coach Chris Altemose his first girls’ varsity coaching win.

On Feb. 18, host Colchester bested the Mount Abe girls, 43-29. Ryleigh Garrow led the Lakers with 15 points. Savannah Scrodin and Laura Bonar each scored six for the Eagles.
On Monday, host Missisquoi prevailed over the Eagles, 37-34, in a game that was close throughout. With the scored knotted at 34-34 in the final minute, the Eagles missed a go-ahead shot, and Coach Connie LaRose said the T-Birds “rebounded and scored quickly” before adding a late free throw to create the final score.
Eagle Abby Reen tied T-Bird Abagail Paquette for game scoring honors with 10 points. Maia Jensen and Madi Gile added seven points each for Mount Abe, which dropped to 1-3.

On Friday, Feb. 19, the OV girls erased an 11-point deficit after three periods to edge visiting D-I Mount Anthony, 40-37. OV trailed, 29-18, entering the fourth quarter, but relied on pressure defense to spark the offense and disrupt the Patriots.
Alice Keith scored 17 to lead OV, Mallory Lufkin’s seven points included key late free throws, and Anna Lee paced the Otters on the boards.
On Tuesday host Burr & Burton outpaced OV, 66-42. Carol Herbert scored a game-high 18 points for BBA. Keith (16) and Lufkin (eight) led OV, which dropped to 1-3.
